the beach party

Utila is a very popular destination for backpackers because of the cheap dive courses and accomodation, it’s also one of those places where many choose to get professionals in diving studying to become divemaster and instructors..this means that many young people tend to pass from or, just like us, stay longer here..
The last sunday of august that corresponds also to the last sunday of the busy season was then celebrated by the main dive schools on the island with a dream beach party...the beach party you would (even) pay for..
We didn’t actually know anything about it and we were going to laze for another day, but there were rumors around and to the offer of free beers, rum and food on the caye it was simply rude to refuse!!
In the southern part of Utila there are in fact few little cays (little sandy islands of low elevation formed on the surface of coral reef) mainly uninhabited and just 30-40 minutes away by boat from the main pier.
Obviously we could expect many boys and girls attending it and ready for a binge drinking day, but we couldn’t expect so much beer, rum and food on a white beach with gorgeous sun and loud music all for us and for free...simply amazing and to hardly believe and honestly to be envied for..

Utila e’ una destinazione molto popolare per viaggiatori da zaino in spalla per gli economici corsi di immersioni subacque e alloggio, e’ anche uno di quei posti dove molti decidono di diventare professionisti delle immersioni studiando per ottenere qualificazione da divemaster e istruttore.. cio’ significa che molti ragazzi tendono a passare o, come noi, a rimanerci un po’ qui..
L’ultima domenica di agosto che corrisponde anche all’ultima domenica dell’alta stagione e’ cosi’ celebrata dalle principali scuole dell’isola con una festa in spiaggia da sogno.. la festa in spiaggia per la quale (potresti) pagare..
In realta’ non sapevamo niente in riguardo e ci preparavamo ad un’altra giornata di pigrizia, ma c’erano voci in giro e alla offerta di birre, rum e mangiare gratis sul caye era semplicemente maleducazione rifiutarla!!
Nella parte meridionale di Utila ci sono infatti piccoli cayes o scogliere (o precisamente delle isolette di sabbia di bassa elevatura che si formano su superfici di barriere coralline) principalmente disabitate e a soli 30-40 minuti di barca dal molo principale.
Ovviamente potevamo aspettarci molti ragazzi e molte ragazze e pronti per distruggersi un po’, ma mai potevamo aspettarci cosi’ tanta birra, rum e roba da mangiare su una spiaggia bianca con un sole stupendo e musica tutta per noi e gratis..semplicemente eccezionale e da non crederci e onestamente da poter essere invidiati..

life on Utila..

life on a Caribbean island (small) cannot get any exciting..ok, well the lifestyle is easy, relaxed and heat makes your mood most of the time...though the mosquitoes compete with bugs and cockroaches and ants, but the beaches and the warm water and some simple dives here and there make for a positive feedback.
on Utila we are basically relaxing and recovering the rest and sleep lost lately in buses and dorms, no matter the few hours at work, boring but that make our all day/week..tourism is not being great anywhere and Honduras' political condition doesn't bring any good..
we though enjoy our cooking, our swims, our walks up and down the town, our little fights and our love, planning for the near future..
it seems, in fact, like Utila and Honduras are gonna be the ending of the second part of the trip...

la vita su una (piccola) isola Caraibica non puo' essere poi cosi' entusiasmante..ok, diciamo che lo stile di vita e' facile, rilassato e il caldo condizione il tuo umore per la maggiore.. seppur le zanzare competano con zecche e scarafaggi e formiche, ma le spiaggie e le calde acque e semplici immersioni qua e la portano a un riscontro positivo.
su Utila ci stiamo praticamente rilassando e recuperando riposo e sonno persi ultimamente in autobus e dormitori, non importano le poche ore a lavoro, noioso ma che ci riempiono la giornata/settimana intera..il turismo non e' eccellente da nessuna parte e la condizione politica Honduregna non aiuta..
seppur stiamo godendo della nostra cucina, le nostre nuotate, le nostre camminata su e giu' per il villaggio, i nostri litigi e il nostro amore, programmando il futuro prossimo..
sembra, infatti, che Utila e Honduras segneranno la fine della seconda parte del viaggio..

on vacation .. again

on the southern part of Guatemala where the beautiful Rio Dulce flows into the Caribbean Sea with Belize and Honduras just a couple of hours away in opposite directions, we headed south to reach the Bay Islands, after few noisy and crowded buses, with the good company of 3 Swiss from Ticino.
we then opted and landed on the smallest of the three main islands that form the Bay Islands: Utila, a one main narrow packed street, with hot Caribbean vibe, mosquito and bugs commercial hub, and some cheap diving facilities.
it seemed good place to stay a bit longer from the first few hours on the island, and in 3 days now we have already found simple occupation to spend some time and earn some little cash and discovered mainly the inland attraction and beaches.
who knows how much we will be staying here for but if we can accept mosquitoes and laziness we might stay enough to enjoy serious diving and some courses..
I guess this could turn to be another vacation for me (after San Blas archipelago's ), switching a bit from our usual everyday buses and escursions, packing and moving..

nella parte meridionale del Guatemala dove il Rio Dulce sfocia nel Mar dei Caraibi con Belize e Honduras a poche ore di distanza in direzioni opposte, ci siamo diretti sud per raggiungere il dipartimento di Isla de la Bahia, dopo altri affollati e rumorosi autobus, in compagnia di 3 simpatici Svizzeri del Ticino.
siamo quindi sbarcati sulla piu' piccola delle 3 principali isole che formano il dipartimento di Islas de la Bahia: Utila, una principale stretta affollata strada, con atmosfera Caraibica, centro commerciale di zecche e zanzare, ed alcune economiche strutture per immersioni subacque.
ci e' sembrato dalle prime ore un buon posto per fermarci per un po', e in 3 giorni abbiam gia' trovato semplici occupazioni per passar un po' il tempo e guadagnare qualcosina e scoperto le principali attrazioni della isola e spiaggie.
non sappiamo alla fine quanto ci fermeremo ma se riusciamo a vincere le zanzare e la pigrizia potremmo stare abbastanza per godere di immersioni e magari corsi..
direi quasi che questa possa essere una seconda vacanza (dopo l'arcipelago di San Blas), cambiando un po' dai soliti autobus e escursioni, fare la valigia e spostamenti..

some glimpses of Maya..

What it used to be the capital of the Maya world is today a large and beautiful national park: el Parque National Tikal, so with the archaeological day you get also a naturalistic day meeting monkeys, squirrels, coati, foxes, toucans and several other birds (all easily spotted..) while wandering into the very thick jungle and appreciating the silence and stillness of nature.
The experience is worth it, maybe even the price of the ticket (around 20 US$/14 € ), considering we camped in the national park itself surrounded by a peaceful starry night and many little insects (sometimes harmless, sometimes not!) to enjoy of the falling asleep and the wakening of the jungle in the evening and in the early morning.
Unfortunately or just sadly, hiring a guide is not part of our budget nor of our specific interest, so walking on the clear paths amongst the tall vegetation that keeps the heat away and picturing the impressive temples and ruins and stopping at any little noise coming from the trees or from the inside of the jungle and enjoying of the acrobatic monkeys jumping from one tree to another and even comparing it with the previous Maya site visited (Palenque) in Mexico lately, made us fall straight into the mistery of what it was happening back in those times.
Hundreads of ruins scattered amongst Guatemala, Mexico, Honduras, Belize and El Salvador are giving evidence pretty neatly about the most popular (most probably) civilization known even if time and impossible investments will never give light to what is still covered by soil and vegetation around here.

Quella che si ritiene fosse la capitale del mondo Maya e’ oggi un grande e bellissimo parco nazionale: el Parque National Tikal, quindi con la giornata archeologica ottieni anche la giornata naturalistica, incontrando scimmie, scoitattoli, coati, volpi, tucani e diversi altri uccelli (tutti facilmente individuabili..) mentre camminavamo nella fitta giungla e coglievamo il silenzio e la tranquillita’ della natura.
L’esperienza vale, forse anche il presso del biglietto (circa 20 US$/14 €), considerando che abbiamo accampato nel parco nazionale stesso circondati da una pacifica notte stellata e tanti piccoli insetti (a volte nnocui, a volte no!) per godere del risveglio della giungla a primo mattino.
Sfortunatamente o magari tristemente, ingaggiare una guida non e’ parte del nostro budget e neanche dei nostri interessi specifici, quindi camminando per i definiti sentieri tra l’alta vegetazione che trattiene il caldo al di fuori e fotografando le impressionanti rovine e templi e fermandoci ad ogni piccolo rumore proveniente dagli alberi o dall’ interno della giungla e godendo delle acrobazie delle scimmie che saltavano da un albero a un altro e addirittura paragonandolo con il precedente sito Maya visitato (Palenque) in Messico ultimamente, siamo caduti diritto nel mistero di cosa avveniva a quei tempi.
Centinaia di rovine sparse tra Guatemala, Messico, Honduras, Belize e El Salvador stanno testimoniando abbastanza nitidamente circa la piu’ popolare (molto probabilmente) civilizzazione conosciuta seppur tempo e investimenti impossibili non daranno mai luce a quanto e’ ancora coperto da terra e vegetazione da queste parti.

Mexico to Guatemala...

Mexico: where Latin America meets USA and you can obviously see it around, where the streets are wider and tidier, where some people seem less humble and the tourists treated as money dispenser and then my little patience with that pinch of stress might bring to some loud arguments (nothing to worry about mum!!ahaha ), not the best picture acquired from these six nights in the so loved Mexico.Mexico that hosts the biggest number of Italian tourists so far encountered, as well as tasty traditional cousine and of course the highest fame for the Maya, all of them met in our quick visit before re-entering Guatemala from a river border, to avoid , legally, the expensive 262 pesos (14 euros) fee, that are supposed to be paid if the staying is longer than seven days!Though, oddly (not really it’s still Latin America!!), no official at the migration office at the border so very unusually we left the United States of Mexico without stamp!So back in the welcoming Guatemala and soon ahead visit to the largest known Maya city ruins site before trying to consider if the best Honduras’ diving spots are not as dangerous as the big cities are being..

Messico: dove l’America Latina incontra gli Stati Uniti di America e lo si puo’ ovviamente vedere in giro, dove le strade sono piu’ larghe e piu’ pulite, dove alcune persone sembrano meno umili e i turisti trattati come distributori di soldi e quindi la mia poca pazienza con quel pizzico di stress puo’ anche portare a degli infuocati litigi (niente di che preoccuparti ma’!!ahaha ), non la migliore fotografia sviluppata da queste sei notti nella tanto amata Messico.Messico che ospita il piu’ alto numero di turisti Italiani incontrati finora, come anche una deliziosa cucina tipica e naturalmente la fama piu’ importante per i Maya, tutti parte della nostra veloce visita prima di rientrare Guatemala da un confine delimitato da un fiume, per evitare, legalmente, la cara tassa di 262 pesos (14 euro), che si e’ dovuti a pagare se il soggiorno e’ superiore a sette giorni!!Sebbene, curiosamente (non tanto siam ancora in America Latina!!), nessun officiale all’ufficio immigrazione alla frontiera ci ha accolto e quindi molto inusualmente abbiam lasciato gli Stati Uniti del Messico senza stamp!Quindi di nuovo nell’accogliente Guatemala e prossima la visita alle rovine della piu’ grande citta’ Maya conosciuta prima di provare a considerare se le migliori immersioni che Honduras offre non sono tanto pericolose quanto le citta’ lo sono attualmente..
