Vacation finished....

When you see the most southern part possible and you know that once left the ship you will not be meeting many that have had the same opportunity and potentially will not ever have any….then I feel privileged .. many people say that is a lifetime experience and even though there are some that have had it more than once, I really believe so,it is such a experience..
The ship stopped only four days out the 16 of the total cruise journey : Montevideo (Uruguay), Falkland Island (controversially Great Britain), the southernmost city Ushuaia (Argentina) and Punta Arenas (Chile).. I couldn’t miss a visit to a colony of penguins while so south in the world so I arranged some excursions while ashore, I couldn’t miss the beautiful National Park of the Tierra Del Fuego region either.. after bargaining some deals with local taxi drivers, off to learn about monogamy amongst Magellanic penguins or that the mums feed the young ones regurgitating in their mouth, or that 70 years ago Tierra Del Fuego was the place were criminals were brought to be jailed..
The life on the ships got boring, spoiled but busy.. I spent most of my time talking with people and I possibly have somebody to visit in North America.. actually I have been telling around that my mum sends me 3000 $ per month so I can afford travelling.. you should have seen their faces..
Obviously what I have seen and experienced cruising the Antartica Peninsula cannot be explained so easily and I guess no picture can give the idea of what nature has left unspoiled.
Just thinking that when there I was basically/technically upside down, compared to the northern hemisphere, is mad!!
Mad that unless you watch a globe, on some maps you wouldn’t possibly have the Antartic Continent.
Mad are also the numbers about it: 85% of the world fresh water, 3rd biggest continent large 2 Australia (40 Italy) in the summer, double in the winter!!, windiest place and driest (less rain than in the Sahara!) on earth, in fact it’s officially considered as a desert..
Now that the “vacation” is finished is time to go back on the road and start to head north, soon on the schedule I have Bolivia, Paraguay and Brasil..
Before that though I am planning some interesting experiences in wineries in Argentina, now that is harvest time..

Quando visiti la parte più a sud che si possa visitare e sai che una volta lasciata la nave non incontrerai molta gente che abbia avuto la stessa opportunità e potenzialmente non l’avrà mai.. allora mi sento privilegiato..molta gente dice che è una esperienza che si può fare una sola volta nella vita e anche se c’è gente che c’è stata più di una volta credo che realmente lo sia..
La nave su un totale di 16 giorni di crociera ha effettuato quattro fermate : Montevideo (Uruguay), Isole Falkland (polemicamente, Gran Bretagna), la città più a sud del mondo Ushuaia (Argentina), Punta Arenas (Chile)..
Non potevo perdermi una visita ad una colonia di pinguini, trovandomi così a sud così ho pianificato delle escursioni , non potevo neanche perdermi il bellissimo Parco Nazionale della regione della Tierra Del Fuego..dopo aver contrattato con dei tassisti locali il prezzo, via a conoscere circa la monogamia tra i pinguini Magellanici o che le mamme per nutrire i loro piccoli gli rigurcitano nella bocca, o anche che la Tierra Del Fuego fino a 70 anni fa era il posto dove i criminali venivano portati per essere imprigionati..
La vita sulla nave è stata noiosa, viziata ma piena.. ho trascorso molto del mio tempo a parlare con la gente e possibilmente ho qualcuno da visitare in America del Nord.. sinceramente ho detto in giro che mi posso permettere di viaggiare perché mamma mi manda 3000 $ al mese e dovreste aver dovuto vedere le facce…
Ovviamente quello che si può vedere e provare navigando la Penisola Antartica non può essere descritto molto facilmente e credo che nessuna foto può rendere l’idea di quello che la natura ha lasciato intatto.
Solo al pensare che quando ero lì ero tecnicamente a testa in giù rispetto all’emisfero del nord, è “malefico”!!
“Malefico” che a meno che non stia guardando un mappamondo, su alcune mappe potresti non aver il continente Antartico.
“Malefico” anche per quanto riguarda i numeri: 85% di acqua sorgiva mondiale, 3° continente più grande per estensione largo 2 Australie (40 Italie) in estate, il doppio in inverno!!, il più ventoso posto e il più secco (meno pioggia che nel Sahara) sulla terra, ufficialmente considerato infatti un deserto..
Ora che la “vacanza” è finita è ora di proseguire, nella lista prossimi sono Bolivia, Paraguay e Brasile..seppur prima di tutto ho intenzione di fare un po’ di esperienze interessanti in alcune cantine in Argentina ora che è tempo di vendemmia…

ANTARTICAAAAAAAAAAAA....

When I booked this cruise I hadn’t really thought of how posh it would have been ... it’s very high standard, but I don’t mind…I don’t mind either that me and the Israeli friend that joined me, are the youngest, that everyday they play “Life for rent” by Dido where there is a part in the song where she sings “I will go down with this ship..”…and I don’t mind that 95% has grey-white hair, and that more than the 60% of the passengers are overweight, considering that the Japanese ones keep the percentage low!!!
But seven restaurant to choose from (with serious high and special service), one (buffet) open 24 hours, any kind of room service you can imagine, toilet paper, soap and towels in the room changed after used once, 25 US$ ( around 17 € ) per hour internet connection, art auctions maybe but just maybe are too much for my ideals..
It’s the first time I experience something like this and as experience I am taking it cause there is always something to learn, yeah, but for sure it’s weird and often uncomfortable to be as passenger on a cruise ship like this when everybody sees you as crew or maybe rich spoiled young boy or better lottery winner as somebody asked me or like somebody else that thought that the company paid for it…
A morning for example I opted for a run around the 500 metres jogging track instead of one of the many interesting seminars organised for the enthusiast passengers: “Eat more to weight less”!!! on the other side another I preferred breakfast served in the room (obviously free) and another time I even spoiled myself jacuzzing outdoor surrounded by Antartica’s peaks (0 degrees outside, around 45° inside the pool!!) and then straight for a sauna..
Everything is so American…but is part of the experience, as the nice people I am obviously meeting, as the transexual marriage on board, as well as getting to know as much as I can about how life is on a cruise ship seen from the crew’s eye!!
I have always been interested in working on a cruise ship … (haven’t we, moro moy ?)
Had a day break in the Falkland Islands and then 4-5 days of scenic cruising around Cape Horn (the southernmost land or better island in South America.) and the Antartica Peninsula that is the southern most part of the world somebody can possibly reach.. we got as south as the 64° of latitude where in winter at -70 degrees is all ice, now summer 0.. and even if the Drake Passage is not nice and moves you a bit (waves up to 10 metres!!!) the sights and albatross, whales and penguins around are worth it and extremely stunning..

Quando ho prenotato questa crociera non ho riflettuto su quanto questa fosse sofisticata.. gli standard son davvero alti, ma non dispiace..non dispiace neanche che io e l’amico israeliano che viaggia con me siamo i più giovani, o che tutti i giorni mettono “Life for rent” di Dido, che canta “affonderò con questa nave..” ..e non dispiace che il 95% ha capelli grigi o bianchi, e che più del 60% dei passeggeri è sovrappeso considerando che quelli giapponesi tengono bassa la percentuale!!
Ma sette ristoranti a scelta (con un eccellente e personalizzato servizio), un (buffet) aperto 24 ore su 24, servizio in camera di qualsiasi cosa immaginabile, 25 $ americani ( circa 17 € ) per ora per la connessione internet, aste d’arte forse ma solo forse son troppo per i miei ideali..
E’ la prima volta che faccio un’esperienza del genere e come esperienza la sto prendendo perché c’è sempre qualcosa da imparare, si ok .. , ma è sicuramente bizzarro e a volte scomodo essere scambiati come fossi del personale, o come ragazzino viziato di ricca famiglia o ancora come una signora argentina mi ha chiesto: “Hai vinto alla lotteria?” o meglio : “La compagnia paga, no?”…
Una mattina per esempio ho preferito una corsa intorno al percorso designato per jogging di 500 metri invece di partecipare a uno dei tanti interessantissimi seminari organizzati per i motivatissimi passeggeri : “Mangi più per pesare meno”!! altre però ho optato per colazione in camera (ovviamente inclusa!!) o ancora più viziato in un’altra occasione per una jacuzzi all’aperto tra i picchi Antartici (0 gradi fuori, circa 45 dentro!! ) e quindi sauna…
Tutto è molto americano … ma è parte dell’esperienza, come la bella gente che ovviamente si conosce, come il matrimonio gay tenutosi a bordo, come anche il cercare di capire com’è la vita della gente che ci lavora su una nave da crociera!!
Ho sempre avuto il pallino di lavorare su una nave da crociera…
Stop di un giorno sulle isole Falkland e poi 4-5 giorni di crociera panoramica intorno al Cabo di Horn (la parte o meglio isola più a sud del Sud America) e finalmente la penisola Antartica, possibilmente la parte del mondo più a sud che si possa raggiungere ...abbiam toccato il 64° di latitudine lì dove in inverno a -70 gradi è tutto ghiacchio e ora estate si toccano gli 0..e anche se il Passaggio del Drago non è comodo e ti scuote un po’ (onde fino a 10 metri!!) il panorama e albatross, balene e pinguini intorno sono comunque meritevoli ed estremamente impressionanti..

curiosità....e Polo Sud

"Mi abuelo es italiano, mi familia tiene sangre italiano"..how many times I heard it, so many.."my granfather is italian, my family has italian blood"..but for them is meeting their origin, so you see their expression of pride,happiness and curiosity...

anyway about curiosities...around 9000 km travelled in the past 32 days (let's say something like Paris to Seoul)...23 nights of them slept in something that was not a bed..and 20 nights in my sleeping bag...in total around 30 hours of internet (less than an hour per day!!personal record!!)...143 hours without talking to mum (other personal record, previous time it was around 120 hours in Germany 2006!!)...2100 mas o menos picture taken...

In the last few days I decided to spend my time trying to get relaxed, organised and ready for the cruise, so I spoiled a bit myself ..I was in a micro town famous for trouts and venison, not much else to do and see.. I went out for dinner both nights in the best and only restaurant in town..me, a book, a glass of wine and nice typical food and you make me happy..and possibly less lonely..50 pesos (around 12 €)...

I also managed to go for a couple of hours hiking while waiting for my bus back to Buenos Aires..nice peaceful mirador (viewpoint) of the lake and funny encounter half way of the walk with a old lady that charged me 2 pesos toll (0,40 €) to proceed..I smelled something cause I wasn't warned about it at the information centre and cause she refused me to take a picture of her...she was very funny face, two teeth left, very strange accent and .. not to be missed..and she couldn't imagine that I had already taken one while asking for it!! and by the way you wouldn't be arguing for 2 pesos, would you?

anyway back in Buenos Aires... traffic of people again (1/3 of the whole population lives here!!)...many things to sort and friends and tomorrow the cruise (route pictured below) ...Antartica I am coming....

"mi abuelo es italiano, mi familia tiene sangre italiano" quante volte mi son sentito dire ciò alla risposta sono italiano.."mio nonno è italiano, la mia famiglia ha sangue italiano"..ma per loro è incontrare le loro origini e puoi vedere le loro espressioni di orgoglio, felicità e curiosità..

a proposito di curiosità..circa 9000 km percorsi negli ultimi 32 giorni (qualcosa come Parigi -Seoul!!)..23 notti dei quali dormiti in qualcosa che non fosse un letto...20 nel mio sacco a pelo..in totale circa 30 ore di internet (meno di un'ora a dì...record personale!!)..143 ore senza poter chiamare mamma (altro record personale!! il precedente era intorno alle 120 ore, Germania 2006!!)..2100 mas o menos foto scattate..

negli ultimi giorni ho deciso di spendere più tempo per rilassarmi, organizzarmi e prepararmi per la nave da crociera...quindi mi son un po viziato..mi son fermato in un micro paese famoso per trota e cervo, nient'altro da fare..son uscito a cena entrambe le sere nel migliore e anche unico ristorante nel villaggio...io, un libro, un bicchiere di vino e buon piatto tipico locale e mi fai felice..e forse sentire anche un pò meno solo....50 pesos (intorno alle 12 €) e passa la paura..

son anche riuscito mentre attendevo il bus per ritornare a Buenos Aires a farmi una camminata di un paio di ore..un bel e tranquillo mirador (punto di osservazione panoramico o belvedere) del lago e un divertente incontro a mezza strada con un' anziana signora che chiedeva 2 pesos pedaggio (0,40 €) per proseguire..mi suonava un pò strano perchè al centro di informazione non mi era stato detto e anche perchè mi ha rifiutato di fotografarla..aveva la faccia molto simpatica, 2 soli denti, un accento molto particolare e .. da non perdere .. e non poteva immaginare che l'avevo già scattata quando glielo stavo chiedendo, e poi non ti metti a far discussione per 2 pesos..

son a Buenos Aires.. traffico di gente di nuovo (1/3 di tutta la popolazione vive qui!!)..tante cose da organizzare e sistemare e amici e domani la crociera (itinerario qui di seguito).. Antartica arrivo..
